My current body of work delves into my past, as I reconnect with my childhood using the drawings I created at the time. These works are focused on expressing happiness shamelessly, and to the fullest extent as an act of rebellion. Whether it's retaliation against my family, or the state of the world right now, these creatures represent a happiness that is impossible to be snuffed out, and will be shown audaciously. I aim to honor the role art played in my life during difficult times through concept and material. Taking a drawing style that used to captivate my wandering mind, I turn what I used to call “Germ Creatures” into 3D ceramic sculptures. They are not supposed to be specific to any one thing, but an accumulation of the new things I saw everyday as a child that influenced my imagination. I create these works from clay and glaze, with the addition of mixed media materials that I used as a kid, including pompoms, pipecleaners, acrylic paint, and glitter. The use of high-brow and low-brow materials represents the carefree nature these creatures have, a disregard for expectations or standards, along with an undeniable self love. These creatures, plants, or aliens live in a state of imagination most of us no longer have access to, but a world I can knock on the door of when I make these sculptures.
